Time of Gods and Dragons

This era in Jaernian history, one of its most eventful, is looked upon with a mixture of fondness and apprehension. It includes several incredibly major events which changed the landscape of Jaern and the fabric of its magic, with adventurers heavily involved in each incident throughout.

Purge of the Kurago

Late 10061 - Late 10063

Demons infest the Kurago, affecting nomads and their incants. Kurago spirits flee, appearing more and more on Jaern and causing havoc. Due to the demonic influence, the landscape of the Kurago itself begins to change. The situation worsens until a group of adventurers manages to clear the demonic influence, allowing the Kurago to return to its old self. 1)

Return of the Dragons

10057 - 10060

After the destruction of Torandor, dragons retreated into a pocket dimension for safety, making a deal with mortals to return after 200 years. They were forgotten, though, and remained in stasis for 2,000 years. In 10061, four obelisks keeping the dragons' dimension active were activated, returning the dragons to the world and causing natural disasters across Jaern from the sheer amount of time magic released.

The ocean level dropped 15 feet across the planet, exposing large amounts of new land, leaving many lizard cities high and dry, and making many docks useless. The volcano on Lojem also became active, leading many dwarves to move away. Dragons are now a regular sight on Jaern, though still remarkable.

The Hegemony Scourge & Jaernian Refusion

10054 - 10056

An event called the Jaernian Refusion occurs, stripping Jaern of its portals and disrupting its magic. Shortly before this event, the Rougtero Guild of Wizards was constructed and opened. It was discovered that the cause of the Refusion was a demonic, alien threat called the Hegemony, which intended to invade and conquer Jaern. They were defeated, and the influence over all their conquered worlds is believed to have been wiped out.

The Jalera Reign

10049 - 10052

A detailed report on this incident can be found here.

The gods establish a magical field across the world that de-powers most non-magical technology. They give little reasoning for this act. Not long after, odd creatures called the Jalera enter Jaern and begin offering useful services such as healing. As Jaernians come to rely on them, it is found that they are in fact mind-controlling Jaernians in the name of “instilling order”. An adventuring party including a few people named Kira and Cronk had a role in expelling the Jalera, returning Jaern to normal.

It is later found that Kira and Cronk, along with a third unnamed companion, would ascend to become the gods Vormaxia, Zepherin, and Almar. This is the first instance of entirely new gods in recorded history.

The Great Plague

10044 - 10047

A detailed report on this incident can be found here.

A plague spreads across large portions of Jaern, with the only treatment being magical healing. Casters capable of healing are stretched thin, and the Centralia Mages' Guild researches healing spells usable by mages in this time. Suspicions run hot that the Mages' Guild itself may be responsible for the plague, in an effort to make money from the sick.

The plague is eventually cured with the help of Isis, though the effort drains her of much of her power. A new incarnation of Isis is born.

The Age of Reckoning

10038 - 10044

A detailed report on this incident can be found here.

Several asteroids impact Jaern, leading to massive tidal waves which kill thousands. They destroy the Superi of Ra, and many gods' “godships,” divine vessels which they often inhabited, were destroyed. All gods, save for Orus and Rudri, were killed. This was a time of great tribulation on Jaern, and it took years for the gods to begin to return. In this time, a new aspect of T'or (devoted to the path of True Justice) was born.

The Ordination ritual was created in this time, allowing for new priests to join the priesthood without the direct intervention of deities.

A war in Lojem began, spurred by tight control of important routes by elven enclaves. This war would eventually end with the reign of the Rougtero Council and establishment of Rougtero as a major city.

This event coincided with a major rework of nomadics, changing the entire fundamental framework of the background.
