Tatiana

History

Tatiana's history is not very well recorded, with much of it left in mere legend rather than official documents. This displeases many of the city's history majors.

In the ancient past, the mountain the city rests on was dug out by dwarves to create one of their cities. However, for an unknown reason, this city fell and over time the structures collapsed in on themselves. Centuries later, humans and elves began to settle the area. Looking for a place to live freely from the rules of the rest of the world, these elves and humans were mostly thinkers and philosophers who wished to live their own free lives. Specifically, many of them were fleeing from a faraway king who had recently been coronated. The name of this king has been lost, as has the name of his kingdom. Upon landing on the shores of the island and climbing the mountain, the people, led by one Captain Tatiana de Galatea. The Captain gave a rousing speech about finally obtaining the freedom to live and govern themselves without the need for kings. they named the city Granitehome, after the common stone found on the island and their hopes to build new lives there.

Many years later, however, great ships were spotted on the horizon. The king the people had escaped had returned to conquer the island. Captain Tatiana, and old woman now, led a fleet to combat these invaders and drive off the king for good. After a long-fought battle, the city was victorious, though not without casualty. Captain Tatiana lost her life in the battle, as did many of her soldiers. As a remembrance of one of the city's founders, the Imperi at the time officially changed the name of the city to 'Tatiana' as remembrance.

Landscape and Architecture

Tatiana is built on the peak of a small mountainous island in the southwest of the Lojem region. The slope of the mountain is very steep, with large cliffs bordering the sea. Due to this steep slope, accessing the city by foot is impossible. One must either enter via the sky or via the singular port that has been dug out from the mountain. A large elevator similar to a ferris wheel takes passengers up to the top. It isn’t amazingly efficient, but elevators that can operate without having to be turned are still in development.

The city itself has a strong steampunk aesthetic. Most of the buildings have appliances run by mechanical pieces connecting to the outside via beams and gears. These beams connect throughout the city to what are essentially power plants, fueled by using magic energy to heat water that turns massive turbines. It's a marvel of architecture that it hasn't sheared or collapsed under itself.

Much of the city’s architecture is a combination of wood and metal. The main metal used is copper. This is because the city rests on a large copper reserve, meaning the city has a surplus of the stuff. Some have begun to question its toxicity, as it occasionally leaks into the water supplies and gets people sick.

Culture and Demographics

Tatiana is a scholar town consisting mainly of humanoids, specifically humans, gnomes, and elves. While there is the occasional orc folk or lizard, they only make up about 15% of the total population in the area. This is due to two main factors. The mountain the city rests on is usually fairly cold and high up, making it dangerous for most lizards except for Kleemudor Purebloods and Draconic Lineage folk. Meanwhile, many Beasthide and Giantkin are driven away given the city’s extreme use of metal and smaller architecture. Goblins have done surprisingly well in the city, making up about 10% of the city’s population on their own.

The city is built around four major colleges, each specializing in a different form of study. These four colleges bring in most of the city’s income. The University Raimi focuses on the sciences, particularly the natural sciences and their applications to the ever-growing societies of Jaern. Roddick College puts its focus on philosophy, politics, economics, and some of the social sciences. The Mustafa Institute of Art has its primary function in the name, focusing more on art, music, literature, the liberal arts, etc. Finally, Jamil University puts its focus on studying the different fields of magic. Many people there work with the University of Raimi to further develop theories. Most of the attendees are the aforementioned humanoids.

Meanwhile, much of the city’s goblinoid population forgoes traditional learning in favor of learning via experience. Most of the ones who find great success tend to do so in an environment less focused on theory and more focused on experimentation and practical application. Most modern inventions from the city are goblinoid developments. Of course, that doesn’t mean goblinoids entirely avoid a higher education. For instance, goblinoid woman Ala Uld is known for creating mathematical proofs around the many theories of gravity on Jaern.

In summary, much of the town is built on scholarship and study. The universities bring money from both tuition costs and from tourism, though the occasional inventor will strike it rich as well. Goblins have thrived in the city as a major workforce, though they and their culture are beginning to meld into the city’s main culture. Most of the rest of the city’s races are fairly well established as part of the scholarly class. A significant portion of the residents are foreign students.

Politics

Politics in Tatiana are a complicated issue. The city has a representative democracy filled with fifteen separate parties all vouching for power. On one hand, this ensures almost everyone has a party they can fully align themselves with. On the other, many policies end up taking multiple election cycles to go through. Every party absolutely hates the others. Even if there is a policy they can agree on, such a policy will likely be blocked due to them not coming up with the idea first.

The parties lie all across the political spectrum. The majority tends to rest in the more centrist parties. The more extreme a party is, the less votes it tends to get. This has caused an issue with three of the parties being exactly the same minus a bit of symbology between them.

The city is broken down into thirty districts based on population size. These districts can only be reshaped if a massive emergency of some kind drastically changes the population of one or more of the districts. Each district selects two candidates to serve on the city’s Imperi. Here is where each elected official debates over laws and rulings. New officials are elected every five years, with each official being allowed a maximum of three terms.

Technology

Tatiana is one of the most advanced cities on Jaern yet to be invaded by adventurers. Due to advancements made by both The University Raimi and Jamil University, a fantastic new form of generating energy has been developed. Most of it revolves around bringing in large amounts of ocean water and heating it on a massive scale to produce steam that then mechanically powers hundreds of devices across the city, though some other advancements have been made. A very new technology developed here is electricity, generated in a similar fashion to the kinetic motion used to power everything. Others have a growing interest in creating something called Magitech. A few professors at Jamil University calculated it may be possible to skip the process of using water to fuel things and instead use the inherent energies generated upon harnessing magic to fuel the city by storing these energies in crystals and then transporting them to whatever device must be powered. Both are burgeoning fields of study, with advancements being made almost daily.

Other Details

Major Locations

The University Raimi - The University Raimi is an academy which focuses most of its efforts on the advancements of mathematics and science. The prestigious university was founded many centuries ago by ruby draconic lizard known as Dragok Raimi. His research focused on a fusion of biology and chemistry. Dr. Raimi even created a new field of mathematics to help him predict how much certain chemicals would oxidize before being used in experiments. Despite all this complicated talk, Dr. Raimi gained enough money from his scientific pursuits to found the university and spend many of his later years as its headmaster. It was one of the first official universities on Jaern. The university is not amazingly popular in these days, as the line between magic and science begins to blur and the Jamil University has a greater pull. Still, The University Raimi is a historical place, and many great thinkers of the past gained their degrees there.

Roddick College - Founded by Aeleron Roddick in 9880, this school was built to serve as a counter to the, at the time, massive University Raimi by focusing less on the hard sciences and more on the “softer sciences” of psychology, philosophy, and even economics and politics. A master of debate and rhetoric, Aeleron had served on the Imperi for the maximum number of terms as a highly regarded member. When he left the Imperi, the government gifted him the money to found the school he'd always wanted to, serving as its headmaster until his death in 10073. The university is a melting pot of Jaern's cultures and has been the brewing grounds for many political movements across the planet.

The Mustafa Institute of Art - This massive art university was founded by Malerie Mustafa, an orcish woman from Tolenice. She initially wished to merely teach people her painting techniques, but quickly realized many artists across the world need an easier way to teach people everything they have learned. As such, Mustafa packed her bags and established a university in Tatiana not long after Aeleron established Roddick College. As time progresses, more and more forms of art are taught at the school. Whilst it was initially just painting, music, sculpting, and writing were quickly added. Most of the students at the university are from Tolenice. However, since the school offers classes on making jewelry, many dwarves and gnomes attend the school to better hone their craft.

Jamil University - The most recent school in the city, Jamil university was founded a mere century ago by Suzanne Jamil. Headmistress Jamil is a powerful wizard who wishes to share the secret of magic to any with a desire to learn. She built the school in Tatiana due to the fact that she believed the University Raimi's works could help her students better understand the innerworkings of magic and in turn their study of magic could assist the University Raimi in its scientific pursuits. Jamil University has quickly eclipsed the others in popularity due to the Age of Adventurers. An easy to access school of magic attracts mages of all kinds, especially with the lower tuition cost than most other magic schools.

Minor Locations

Bibliotheca Tatiana - The Bibliotheca Tatiana is a massive public library, three stories tall. The walls are almost entirely lined with shelves filled to the brim with books, with even more shelves stuffed between. It is sometimes a bit hard to walk with how stuffed the place is. Originally, it was a small temple to Tarus. However, around two centuries ago, Roddick College approached the temple about adding an extension to their temple meant to serve as a library for their students. This is because the university higher-ups knew the Tarusians would do almost anything to keep their books safe. Eventually, the three other universities approached the temple with similar propositions. A deal was made allowing all students from each university to access the whole library with the caveat that the universities pay for the upkeep of the Tarusian temple. The library contains a copy of almost every book on Jaern.

The Square of the Four - This is the meeting point between each of the university campuses. The square is a great place of commuting and meeting between the four. The ground is inlaid with a large circle cut into fourths. Each fourth is colored to represent the proper schools. In the center of the square is a large statue depicting the four figures, each facing one of the cardinal directions. The statues are of the four founders of the universities: Dragok Raimi, a draconic lineage in a lab coat, Aeleron Roddick, an elf man with glasses holding a pen and paper, Malerie Mustafa, an orcish woman with a paintbrush and beret, and Suzanne Jamil, a human woman in a thin dress and large witch hat wielding a wand. The only one still alive is Suzanne Jamil. Very frequently, large events are held or announced at this meeting place, as it symbolizes the center of the city’s pride and joy.

The Nightingale Nightstop - This small little place is a restaurant only open at night. It is found just a few blocks away from The Mustafa Institute's central theater. Most of the food there is meant to be carried out and back to homes or apartments, though there is some scant seating. The food served there is commonly made in bulk. It consists of a lot of meals made from large batches, like noodles, pastas, and stews. Because of this, the food is able to be made filling and cheap. It is most popular among students looking for food to eat during late-night study sessions.

Important NPCs

Ala Uld - An older goblinoid woman. Her hair is a bright gray and is kept up in what can only be described as a “flame-like” style. She’s a complete and utter genius of her time. She has determined mathematical proofs for everything from gravity and springs to energy generation, to the movements of fluids. While the numbers are occasionally a bit shaky, she is ever refining formulas to be as close to exact as possible. She’s made more discoveries in her lifetime than most others will ever see.

Suzanne Jamil - Suzanne Jamil is a very old human woman. She has piercing green eyes, and gray hair. They say it used to be a dark black. Suzanne is much older than she appears at all times. She has lived for centuries, and constantly uses magic to extend her lifespan. More specifically, every fifty years, she uses a magical potion to revert her age back to twenty-five. Suzanne is a very powerful wizard, heading the magic institution named after her. While she used to travel to learn the secrets of magic, being the head of a school keeps one fairly busy. As such, her magic power has stagnated, barely learning anything new in the past one hundred years. Both intelligent and wise, few would ever dare to trifle with her, or challenge her. Some say she once challenged Vormaxia and Tarus to a game of chess, though Suzanne denies these claims, usually whilst stifling a grin.

Grant Muspel - Grant Muspel is a gnomish man with curly brown hair. He usually wears a simple pair of clothes with suspenders underneath a large greasy apron. Grant is the owner of the Nightingale Nightstop. He recognized during his university years that a lot of people needed a place like this, and as soon as he graduated, he started the restaurant. A decent head for business, Grant is a fun-loving soul who does his best to ensure his employees enjoy their work. It is hard to find people willing to work so late at night, and as such he does his best not only to accommodate his customers, but to treat his workers as kindly as possible as well. Mess with them and be prepared to face the wrath of a gnome who knows how to use a knife to perfectly cut bone.
