This document is meant to be a basic guide to planar concept and travel in the Jaern setting.

Definitions

Adjacent - When a point on one plane touches a point on another plane. These two planes are adjacent to each other. Planes may touch at a single point, a line, or they may overlap.

Disconnected - When a plane has no adjacent planes, it is said to be disconnected.

Other Port - A creature ability that allows the creature to port, subject to planar mapping and planar laws, to a plane adjacent to its home plane while it is in its home plane, or back to its home plane while it is in a plane adjacent to it. Creatures can find planes they can port to using Planar Sensing.

Otherworld - A rank 15 Dimensions spell that allows travel between planes. It is not subject to the planar mapping rules nor does a plane need to be adjacent to open a portal to it, though it is subject to the planar laws.

Overlapping - When two adjacent planes touch at every point on each plane.

Plane - A finite or infinite universe or dimension. The size of a plane is variable and can range for the size of a penny to an infinite universe. Each plane has a unique set of Planer Laws that the plane will uphold.

Planar Laws - The physical and magical laws of a particular plane. These laws could be set by a plane when it was created or they could have been added by a powerful deity. These laws can alter how magic works, any physical laws, and what things can enter a plane. Examples of Planar Laws that can affect Planar Travel:

  • No portals can be opened to and/or from this plane.
  • Only non-intelligent creatures can enter this plane.
  • Only invited creatures can enter this plane.
  • Creatures with a physical body are not allowed in this plane.
  • No deities are allowed in this plane.

Planar Mapping - The idea that a point on one plane corresponds to a point on another plane in some fashion. Methods of planar mapping include:

  • Direct Mapping - A single point on one plane directly corresponds to a single point on another plane. A simple equation would be involved to calculate this mapping function.
  • Random - There is no real mapping on this plane. The planar rules force a random transformation function when entering and/or leaving this plane.
  • Complex Mapping - This method involves a tricky transformation function that is beyond the scope of Jaernian mathematics. A single point will always correspond to a single point on the other plane, but beyond that it would just be guesswork.
  • Single Point - When entering a plane, you will always end up at a single point. This may be the only point you can leave the plane from.

Planar Sensing - This is a creature's ability to sense planes, that it can port to, adjacent to its current point in its current plane. This acts as a normal sense to any creature that has it.

Planar Travel - Traveling between two planes through magical means or through natural creature abilities.

Pocket Dimension - A finite plane of a fixed size that is created either at a particular point within another plane or bound to an object. The pocket dimension is only adjacent to the plane/object that it is bound to. If the pocket dimensions binding is destroyed, through a revoke or other event, anything within the pocket dimension is safely forced out to the point at which the pocket dimension was bound. The more energy used to create/maintain a pocket dimension, the larger it can be. Be guided by spells such as Pocket.
