Hook

Municipal Treasure (Rougtero Lawbook Heist)

Plot Synopsis

[Hook] Hello everyone! It's me, Rudri, hiring YOU to break into Rougtero's City Hall and edit the Libro d'Ordini, the book of ordinances of the Rougtero Council. In that book are two lines, one prohibits the open worship of Myself, the other line has to deal with some additional duties imposed on a variety of goods such as spices, raw wool, and dried fruit. The first line is in near the front of book, and I don't know where the second one is, but you're clever, I'm sure you'll find it. As a reward, I'll give you each 300 gold pieces, along with whatever you can find not nailed down nearby. Meet my follower Brently in The One Eyed Jack. He'll give you some plans and some items to help you along.

The party arrived at the One Eyed Jack Tavern and met Brently who explained the mission to them. He told them to case the joint on the Judiciary building then come back to get helpful magic items (temporary) and then he will teleport them into the building with a teleportation circle that will be able to teleport them out. The party went to the building and started looking around and asking questions. At first they only aroused a moderate amount of suspicion, and two of them got a tour because Karma is Hendrik’s kid. The tour allowed the party to get a good view of the two main corridors. Later, Stan and Bard (who had been kicked out of the building) went to a window on the side of the building [which I hadn’t prepped >:( ] and then they teleported in [to a hallway I hadn’t prepped sigh]. The party found an old archival library, then Stan ran through the hallway (which was impossible to get to without magic), alerting several guards who eventually grabbed him and removed him from the building. Additionally, during the tour, some guards were warned about lead paint on the walls and told they should unionize. When the party returned to the tavern, they got some temp magic items to help them with the heist, then they teleported with the circle into the old archives. The party managed to knock out several of the guards and then disguise themselves as guards, avoided many traps, and then used their disguises to scout around. Eventually, one of the disguised party members tried to open a door that was explicitly not to be entered, setting off a trap and causing all the guards nearby to attack. Combat began, an ecto wall was cast to stop reinforcements, and the party broke into the State’s Attorney’s Office only to find that the safe was empty. The increased level of security was due to the fact that the guards highly suspected a heist due to the suspicious behavior from the day before. This led to the original Libro d’Ordini being relocated to the Rougtero Vault. After finding the book missing, the party trashed the place, found 2 more magic items and then left.

The final death toll was 12 guards dead and the Scribe being shoved in a box. The Kothian ambassador, who was seen talking to the would-be intruders, was conveniently guarded by the ecto wall, leading Rougtero to blame Koth for the terrorist attack. Additionally, since a significant amount of Rudrite magic was detected at the scene of the crime, a large amount of anti-Rudrite sentiment boiled over and rioters began persecuting suspected Rudrites (including a large number of innocent non-Rudrites) and beating them, some even to death. Brently was killed in this violence. The Rougtero captain of the guard is removed and is replaced with a hardliner Righteousness T’orite due to the prior captain’s failure to keep the city safe.

Because Rudri was so pleased with all the chaos (and the session ended up being 6 hours long), party ended up with 3000 exp, the full 300 gp, and 50 gp each that they found.
