The Day Has Come! The Night Is Passing! Silmarillion Game - Part 6

Plot Synopsis

The party reunited with Quinn a short distance away from the Fëanorian encampment, before resolving to focus on hunting down the Balrog before going to speak with the Teleri, as any negotiations would be difficult while it was on the loose. They followed its trail which led south and somewhat west, which was not hard due to the giant demon of fire not being very subtle or stealthy. While on its trail, they discussed the matter of Fëanor, such as how to ensure the alliance they were building with the Elves would continue to hold and not fall apart due to internal conflicts such as happened with Fëanor before. As the problem was greater than simply removing Fëanor from leadership due to the attitudes of his sons and followers, they eventually figured out that with the changes Fëanor had gone through, he was unlikely to cause the conflict they were worried about and thus they could focus on furthering his development towards diplomacy.

The trail of charred brush and toppled trees eventually led them to the foothills of Dorthonion, where they were intercepted by scouts of Finarfin. The scouts nervously asked them if they knew of the deeds that had gone down, both with the reconciliation of Fëanor and the Teleri, and the escaped Balrog. The party confirmed that both were true, which led the scouts to their worry about the Balrog. While the Noldor held the first line of siege near Angband which kept most enemies inside, small forces occasionally slipped out which forced the Noldor to maintain a second line at the northern edge of their territories so no evil could threaten their civilians in the heartlands. The Balrog was now approaching this second line, at which point the Elves would be forced to slay it. This put the party on a time limit, so they forwent a rest, tracking the Balrog through the night along its erratic path through the woods and towards the darkness infested mountains near the river Sirion. There they came across the Balrog, where Quinn approached prompting the Balrog to speak to them. The party challenged the Balrog on why it was fleeing if it was not scared of anything as it claimed, to which it insisted that it left the battle of its own accord because it chose not to serve Morgoth any longer and that it would build up a force of its own in these mountains. The party informed it that they could not let it stay here near the Elves, which the Balrog refused to listen to, believing that both Morgoth and Elves were weak, and that it would strike against Morgoth only once it had built up its forces from defected evil creatures, not before as the party wanted. When Quinn approached, the Balrog became more defensive, putting the party on high alert, and when their persuasion failed, Quinn cast a spell to banish it back to the Timeless Halls, with the Balrog unable to react in time to stop it.

Once the Balrog was gone, the party was able to follow the river Sirion down to the fortress of Minas Tirith, one of the bastions of the second line of the siege. There, they again met soldiers who they informed of the Balrog’s removal. Gaining information from them about the Girdle of Melian, the magical barrier that Queen Melian of Doriath placed to protect the forest of the Teleri, as well as how to enter it, they set off for Doriath to speak to King Thingol about the alliance to storm Angband.
