Legend of the Black Reef II (High Seas, Jaern)
Plot Synopsis
The party sets off on their voyage towards the Black Reef, which was projected to take about a week. Sailing is smooth for the first day, as they get to know the crew. They spot an Onivero vessel on the horizon, and manage to communicate back and forth with it a little. The ship tells them to "return to the city", mistakenly believing they are also an Onivero vessel.
As night falls, a storm begins to descend. The storm grows worse and worse, but the crew is able to weather the waves. In the midst of the storm, the crew realizes that Capt. Morrow has entered some kind of dissociative episode, firing into the empty waves and screaming at the sea. They manage to calm her down after she turns her gun on Serena, though, and the cook Juana Cammie gives them some good food and explains that, once, the Captain had been on a different crew. They went to the Black Reef, and she was the only one to return.
Additionally, it's rumored that a giant abyssling lives in the Reef, nicknamed Neptune's Fang - some sailors believe it to be the wrath of Neptune himself. Abruptly, as the storm breaks, the mages in the party feel a magical jolt... and then, suddenly, they've arrived at the Reef. True to its name, the entire thing is blackened like coal, and the party quickly realizes that this black color is billions of microscopic abysslings covering the entire reef. Most of it is made up of shipwrecks and bones, built around the carcass of some impossibly giant creature. They explore on rowboats, as the Storm's Empress cannot fit inside. Using salt to clear out pathways, they find the ruins of an abandoned Onivero village as well as a haunted shipwreck. Both of these places have strange slabs inside, with scraps of some story written in Aquan.
After clearing the way forward through both these places, they find a spot of greater abyssling activity. After they kill most of the abysslings, a single survivor emerges and begins to eat its kin...
