Winterfall IV - Pthora, Cahyali

Plot Synopsis

The party gathers at Volkov's barracks to put together their plan. Volke will sneak Uriel into the airship, where she will use Dimension Door to teleport the rest of the party inside. There, they plan to hijack and take the airship, then crash it in the mountainous tundras north of the city. Just before they crash, Uriel plans to teleport the party back to Polis, near the Silver Cup coffeeshop. They pull off the first parts of the plan perfectly, but then realize that there is no one aboard: the ship is completely automated, apparently by some strange mech which also serves as the engine. This ship is sentient to a degree, and acts to defend itself by quickly and effectively shooting down Ember Army pursuers.

When the party crashes the ship, though, the ship suspects foul play and rebels, deciding to exterminate this threat. Uriel's teleportation feels off, but they decide to try anyways. The portal goes wrong, teleporting them into the snow just a few hundred feet away from where the ship crashes and burns. The mech, though, is unharmed, and finds the party to engage them in battle. They defeat it after six rounds of lasers, missiles, and chainsaws, and watch as a humanoid wisp of earth magic rises from the chassis and escapes, freed, into the ground. The party ponders this and gathers that it may have been a mortal soul who spent some time in the elemental planes. They then realize that they're stuck in the tundra.

Sadie casts Hut of Warmth, manifesting as a small campground of Ley'Orkian military tents. The party retires for the night, but Elizabeth and Aether go to confront Marlowe, having noticed that the armor she wore in battle was an Ember Army uniform. She admits to having been Ember Army, and hands Elizabeth her personal journal to look through. She does look through it, and discovers - to her dismay and horror - that Marlowe was the one who planned and executed the operation that destroyed Brensweep. She spends a while crying in her tent, just taking in the reality. Meanwhile, Uriel apologizes to Sadie for what she'd said before, blaming her for the death of her family and country. Sadie, however, is heavily drunk. Uriel goes to speak with Elizabeth, and they agree that Marlowe needs to pay for what she's done. With the party broken up, they make peace and go to sleep for the night.
