The Battle at Brokenreach I (Shinneok, Cahyali)

Plot Synopsis

The party arrives at a major administrative building for the Lancer Knights in Victoria, capital of Shinneok. They meet with Gwendolyn Young, a leader of the Knights and their hirer. She gives them the mission objective: to accompany a platoon of Shinnean soldiers to reclaim a military outpost on the Brokenreach peninsula that has been suddenly captured by Pthora. This is more than a straightforward battle, though. They must assassinate a high-value target seen at the base: Katerina Zimina, High General of Pthora's Ember Army, and they must keep their associations to the Shinnean government and army strictly under wraps.

Charlie calls on the greater demon Dantalion for knowledge and assistance, and he lets her know that he cannot reach the mind of Zimina or her adherents, as something powerful from another plane guards them. The party wonders what it could be, but comes up with nothing.

The party boards a military convoy headed to southeastern Shinneok via rail. The journey takes about a week, during which time they find a suspected spy aboard and interrogate him. A demonic spirit is summoned to possess the spy, and commanded to find the Pthoran commanders and feed them false information about the inbound army. Once they arrive at Mirrorborough, the train stops, the army begins their march, and the party goes ahead - flying on Spite's back until they find the base.

The party sneaks into the base as a Pthoran officer is giving a speech to the army. They expertly dispatch some guards, and find a strange little girl that seems to be able to see invisible things. She lets them into the third floor of the base, where they find Zimina lounging in her office. After exchanging a few words, they attack and kill her, only for her to get back up. The army approaches in the distance. A battle is about to begin.
